What Is Kosher Cleaning?

Kosher cleaning is a specialist process carried out on road tankers and tank containers that transport food-grade products. To meet Kosher certification rules, tanks must be cleaned according to strict religious and procedural requirements approved by the rabbinate.
This ensures that products carried in the tank remain fit for consumption under Kosher law and that no contamination occurs from previous loads.

Only a select number of NRTCA-approved cleaning stations are certified to perform this type of clean.

How Kosher Tanker Cleaning Works

Kosher cleaning follows a set sequence of steps that must be performed precisely and under the supervision or approval of a recognised Rabbi.

The process typically includes:
A full pre-clean and inspection of the tank.
Thorough cleaning using approved agents and high temperatures.
A Kosher steam or hot water flush lasting at least 30 minutes.
Final authorisation and certification by the supervising Rabbi.
Once complete, the cleaning station issues a Kosher Cleaning Certificate confirming that all Kosher requirements have been met.

Recognising a Kosher Clean on an EFTCO Cleaning Document (ECD)

When a tanker has been cleaned to Kosher standards, this will be clearly marked on the EFTCO Cleaning Document (ECD) issued by the cleaning station.
The ECD will state either:
“Kosher cleaning including 30 minutes steam”, or
“Kosher Cleaning P26”
This ensures full traceability and proof that the tanker meets Kosher compliance for food-grade transport.

Why Kosher Cleaning Matters

For manufacturers and logistics companies transporting food products, Kosher cleaning is vital. It helps to:
Prevent cross-contamination between non-Kosher and Kosher loads.
Protect product integrity and consumer trust.
Comply with the requirements of religious authorities and food safety regulations.
Support international food transport standards across the supply chain.
Choosing an NRTCA member certified for Kosher cleaning guarantees that your cleaning process meets all religious, legal, and safety obligations.
