What Is the EFTCO Cleaning Document?
The EFTCO Cleaning Document (ECD) is the official European standard cleaning certificate used across the tanker cleaning industry. It provides clear, reliable proof that a road tanker or tank container has been cleaned safely, correctly, and in full compliance with recognised procedures.
Each ECD is issued by an approved, SQAS-assessed cleaning station and includes a unique traceable number that links directly to the cleaning site — giving customers total confidence in the cleaning process.
Why the ECD Was Created
Before the introduction of the ECD, cleaning certificates varied from country to country, leading to confusion and potential safety risks.
To solve this, the European Federation of Tank Cleaning Organisations (EFTCO), working with the chemical and transport industries, developed a single, standardised cleaning document that could be recognised and trusted throughout Europe.
This system means that a tanker cleaned in the UK using ECD code P26 – Kosher Cleaning, for example, can be understood instantly at a loading terminal in France, Germany, or any other European country.
Why the ECD Matters
The ECD is more than a form — it’s an essential safety and quality tool. It ensures that every cleaning station:
Works to the same recognised European standards.
Issues uniform, traceable documentation that customers can verify.
Protects against fraudulent or falsified cleaning records.
Supports health, safety, and environmental compliance across the supply chain.
By using an ECD, transport companies, chemical manufacturers, and logistics providers can be certain that tanks are cleaned safely, thoroughly, and consistently before being reloaded.
How the ECD Works
Each ECD includes a list of standard cleaning codes, covering everything from hot water washes to Kosher cleaning and steam disinfection.
When cleaning is complete, the station issues the document — detailing the methods used and confirming that the process meets SQAS and EFTCO standards.
Because each document carries a unique serial number, it can be traced back to the specific cleaning station and date, ensuring full transparency and accountability.
ECD and the NRTCA
The National Road Tanker Cleaners Association (NRTCA) is a founding member of EFTCO and plays a key role in maintaining the standards behind the ECD in the UK and Ireland.
Only NRTCA member cleaning stations that meet SQAS requirements are authorised to issue the EFTCO Cleaning Document.
If you want to check whether a cleaning document is valid or confirm the details of a cleaning station, please contact the NRTCA for verification.
Benefits of Using ECD-Approved Cleaning Stations
Choosing a tanker cleaning company that issues the ECD gives you peace of mind that your equipment has been cleaned to the correct standard. It helps you:
Meet regulatory and customer requirements.
Avoid delays at loading points caused by invalid or missing documentation.
Ensure cleaning standards are recognised internationally.
Maintain a consistent record of safe, professional cleaning.
Protecting Safety and Standards Across Europe.
The ECD helps create a safer and more transparent supply chain for everyone involved in tanker transport. It ensures that cleaning stations, drivers, and operators all work from the same standards — promoting trust, safety, and quality across borders.
Only SQAS-approved NRTCA members can issue the official EFTCO Cleaning Document.
Choose verified, compliant, and professional tanker cleaning — wherever your journey takes you.
